Industrial memory

The history of mining in Anina

From the discovery of coal to the development of a mining town and the transformation of industrial heritage into a museum.

From coal seam to Shaft I

Local tradition says that the coal seam was discovered by the children of a woodcutter, after black, shiny stones caught fire in a pit where they had made a fire.

On 2 April 1874, work began on the current Shaft I. The works were coordinated by chief engineer Gregor A. Marka and supervised by the technical teams of the mining operation.
