The Banat Semmering • since 1863
A journey through mountain, history and engineering
The Anina–Oravița railway is one of Romania’s most remarkable historic rail routes: 33.4 km of mountain track, 14 tunnels, viaducts, tight curves and dramatic landscapes in the Banat Mountains.
History
From Anina’s coal to railway heritage
The line is presented here from Anina toward Oravița, while historically it connected Anina’s mining area with Oravița and the wider transport network of Banat. It opened on 15 December 1863 for freight traffic, while passenger services began in 1869.
Today, the route is seen as a rare piece of industrial heritage: a railway that still preserves the logic, shape and technical ambition of the 19th century.
Route
A short distance turned into an adventure
On the map, Anina and Oravița are close. On the ground, the railway climbs through the Banat Mountains, crossing steep terrain, forests, valleys and rock cuttings.
This is a slow, scenic and deeply atmospheric journey. Speed is not the point here. The point is to experience how a 19th-century railway still crosses the mountain.
Engineering
Why it is called “The Banat Semmering”
Mountain tunnels
The route includes 14 tunnels with a total length of roughly 2 km, built in an era when heavy works relied heavily on manual labour.
Very tight curves
The minimum curve radius reaches about 114 m, an unusually demanding feature for railway operation.
Viaducts and retaining walls
Bridges, viaducts and retaining walls turn the route into an open-air museum of railway engineering.
